ULTra Vehicles

The ULTra vehicle immediately conveys the feeling of travelling in an iconic and streamlined mode of transport. Its clean and subtle lines are perfect for the architecture and feel of the BAA application at London Heathrow. What this vehicle also provides is an underlying chassis upon which many different customizations may be placed.

The construction of the vehicle allows for a flexible interior and exterior that can be tailored to suit the surrounding environment. Provided the modifications do not affect critical aspects such as the vehicle wheelbase and disability access, the design can be altered as much as desired.

Vehicle Dimensions for ADA access Physical Specifications

Below are the physical specifications for the ULTra vehicle. Your designs should be based around these dimensions, with minor variations perfectly acceptable.

Vehicle Length 3.7 m
Vehicle Width 1.47 m
Vehicle Height 1.8 m
Empty Weight 820 kg
Door opening area* at least 1.5m x 0.9m (h x w)
Flat floor area at least 1.44m x 1.2m (l x w)

*The door opening area is (and must remain) fully ADA and DDA compliant.

3D Design Template

The above file, in Sketchup 7 format, provides a reference template for designing your own custom ULTra vehicles. The model contains a design similar to the Heathrow production vehicles, as well as bounding boxes demarcating the allowable tolerances of the chassis, exterior shell, and passenger compartment.

To view and modify this file, you will need to install Sketchup 7 on your computer. Once the file is open, be sure to click through the pre-formatted slides, to receive an annotated tour of the features of the model.

Interior Design

Everything within the vehicle interior can be customised to provide a travel experience that harmonizes with the surrounding environment. The interior panels are vacuum formed from grey, grained ABS, which offers a neutral base from which a variety designs can be produced; the visualisations shown below outline some of the design ideas for the interior of the BAA vehicles, where the elegant bench seat design combines style with functionality, providing additional seating capacity for larger group sizes.
