Bath Design Competition

In 2009, designers from around the world were offered the chance to submit their visions of how ULTra PRT could be adapted to the context of Bath. The results of this competition were presented at a public exhibition held in Bath, on November 12th/13th, 2009. The designs were assessed via a public survey at this exhibition, as well as the opinions of an independent jury, chosen not only for their technical expertise, but also for their local knowledge of Bath and its cultural and historic environment.

ATS is proud to announce the winners of this design competition, whose high-quality designs have demonstrated a wide variety of solutions to the question of how to design PRT vehicles infrastructure for Bath.

Why hold a design contest?

In a cultural and historic environment such as Bath, the aesthetics of the system will be paramount. The visual appearance of the ULTra vehicles, guideway, and stations at Heathrow - while perfectly suited to an airport environment - may not be appropriate in Bath. However the ULTra design is extremely flexible and can be adapted to fit the local functional and aesthetic requirements.

In order to discover the best possible solution for Bath, ATS would like explore the most possible solutions. This competition gave designers around the world a unique opportunity to propose their own aesthetic designs for all aspects of the system: the vehicles, guideway, and the stations - showing how this new transport technology can best be integrated into the urban fabric of Bath.

What now?

The designs and ideas that were generated during this competition will be included in the final published study which ATS is currently producing. The results of this study will be disseminated throughout Europe via the CIVITAS Renaissance programme, as well as promulgated on the ATS website
